From May 1st  – October 15th you can find some exotic new residents at Duke Forest. During this time the 250 lemurs cared for by the Duke Lemur Center are allowed to run free in sections of the forest. You can get up close and personal with the lemurs in this environment with the Center’s Walking with Lemurs tour. This $95, hour-long tour allows you to explore the Duke Lemur Center’s 85 acres of forest, where there are no barriers between you and the animals. You will definitely want to bring your camera for this incredible opportunity to see 15 species of lemurs as well as lorises and bushbabies. For more information on the Walking with Lemurs tour, check out this video!

Did you know that Durham is home to the largest population of lemurs outside of Madagascar? In 1966 the Duke Lemur Center was established as a sanctuary for all species of lemurs, many of which are now endangered. The Center suppors a wide variety of conservation projects in Madagascar and provides the opportunity for students and the public to learn about these incredible creatures.

In addition to the Walking with Lemurs tour the Center also provides year round learning opportunities such as their Lemurs Live! tour, a $10, hour-long tour which gives you the opportunity to see the lemurs and learn more about their natural habitat. And if you’re looking for a truly unique experience check out their Painting with the Lemurs event, where you’ll get a behind-the-scenes tour and the opportunity to see the lemurs try out their painting skills!

If you’re interested in making one of these tours of the Duke Lemur Center part of your stay at our Durham bed and breakfast please let your innkeeper know and they can help you make arrangements!
