Get Ready to Watch Durham Burst into Bloom

With all of the warm weather we’ve been having our thoughts have turned to spring and all the beautiful blooms we have here at the Inn and around Durham! The Sarah P. Duke Gardens are one of the best places to see the blooms of spring and early summer. The Gardens 55 acres are perfect for a leisurely stroll and allow you to travel from the native forests of North Carolina, to English rose gardens, to a tranquil Water Lilly gallery.

If you have a green thumb (or want to cultivate one) check out the classes and tours that the gardens offer. On April 5^th join the garden’s expert staff for a Historic Gardens Color Walk and learn about how to create prime seasonal plant combinations. Or, if you interested in learning about floral design take advantage of the Spring Flower Basket class to learn how to create a gardenscape in a basket. “Lose yourself in real life” at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival

A Festival like this offers a sustained, concentrated exposure to the sheer emotional power of documentary filmmaking, its ability to communicate the drama embedded in human experience. Non-fiction cinema holds the limelight for the four days (April 12^th – 15^th) of the Full Frame Documentary Festival. This year the festival features over 100 films, as well as discussions and panels with filmmakers and film professionals. The festival will take place in downtown Durham, with many of the films being shown at the beautiful Carolina Theater. Advanced tickets are available April 2^nd and tickets will also be available for purchase at the door.

Elvis Costello Lets Fate and Fans Pick the Tunes at DPAC

On April 29^th Elvis Costello and the Imposters bring their Spinning Song Book tour to the Durham Performing Arts Center. Costello has come up with a creative twist for this tour, asking fans to come up on stage and spin the Wheel to select which of his hits will be played next. This performance will be completely unique from all the others on the tour since you’ll have a chance to help choose the set. Tickets are available through the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Explore Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art at Duke’s Nasher Museum of Art

Contemporary artist Alexander Calder is best known as the inventor of the mobile and his work has inspired countless other works of art. Calder’s works and those he has inspired were the impetus for the exhibit Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art, now on display at Duke’s Nasher Museum of Art through June 17^th. The exhibits features 32 works by Calder as well as pieces by seven young artists influenced by his style, giving visitors the chance to see Calder’s work and his contemporary’s side by side.

Additional sculptures that incorporate unusual materials and found objects, similar to Calder’s style, will be at the Nasher through July 8^th, in the exhibit Angels, Devils and the Electric Slide: Outsider Art from the Permanent Collection. Tickets for the exhibits are available through the Nasher Museum of Art.

Let Your Taste Buds Run Wild!

March is Exotic Meat month at Bull City Burger and Brewery, so if you have a taste for alligator, ostrich, iguana, buffalo, venison, antelope, wild boar, or kangaroo now is your chance to try it. Exotic Meat month isn’t the only time that BCBB burgers are one-of-a-kind since they make their buns in house, experiment with a variety of pickled vegetables, and insist on sourcing nearly every one of their ingredients from local suppliers.

Their menu features burgers (of course!) including a dynamite veggie burger, hot dogs, and fries. As their name implies they also make beer on the premise, and feature a rotation of brews throughout the year. Some of the seating indoors is communal, and it may be getting just warm enough to enjoy their patio seating!
