September 2011 :: North Carolina Symphony

The end of summer brings many exciting cultural and educational opportunities to the Triangle. Throughout the month guests at the Arrowhead Inn can find events related to everything from birds to beer. The North Carolina Museum of Art is displaying frames from The Birds of America, life-size prints of birds created by the American naturalist James Audubon. The museum is home to one of only about 200 remaining complete sets of this work of art.

Another local museum, the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science, is hosting the Science of Beer event on September 22nd. This event requires pre registration, and will feature lessons taught by local breweries, scientists, and home brewers. This class can give you a whole new appreciation for your favorite brew and may help you understand just what makes it so delicious.

September also marks the beginning of the North Carolina Symphony’s Fall Season. Performed in the beautiful Meymandi Hall in Raleigh, this year’s lineup includes everything from Mozart to Broadway.

United States Visitor Care Code Helps You Travel Green

When it comes time to plan your next trip to Durham check out www.visitorcarecode.org to learn about how you can be a more sustainable traveler. The United States Visitor Care Code was developed by the Center for Sustainable Tourism at East Carolina University and contains ten actions that travelers can take to reduce their impact on the environment, support communities, and have a more rewarding experience during their travels. Travelers do not have to follow all ten actions, instead they can pick and choose those that work best for them or that they feel are most important.

Here are some of the actions from the United States Visitor Care Code and how could participate in them on your next trip to Durham:

Learn About Your Destination- Enjoy a rewarding experience by learning more about the natural environment, culture, and history that makes every destination unique.

You can learn about Durham before you go by visiting the Durham CVB’s website. While you are here you can learn about the area’s natural history through hands on experience such as the paddle trips led by Frog Hollow Outdoors. You can also explore Durham’s history by taking a trip to Historic Stagville or Bennett Place, the site of the largest Civil War surrender.

Support Locals – As a visitor the money you spend on your trip can help support the local artisans, farmers, and business owners whose livelihood depends on tourism.

During your visit to Durham stop by the Farmers' Market and Craft Market to find locally grown produce and handmade products such as chocolates, soaps, and crafts. Many of the restaurants in the area are owned by Durham residents and offer everything from pies made from scratch to upscale dining.

Dispose of your Waste Properly – Leave a beautiful place for others to enjoy – recycle where possible and always dispose of your waste properly

Every guest room comes equipped with a recycling bin at the Arrowhead Inn, so it is easy to make sure that your recyclable products go to their proper place.

Root, Root, Root for the Home Team

An evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park starts with the National Anthem and the introduction of the Durham Bulls loveable mascot Wool E. Bull. From there it is nine innings of great baseball punctuated by games on the field for families and children, appearances by Wool E. Bull, and the opportunity to enjoy peanuts, crackerjacks, hot dogs, and local craft beers. For many games, win or lose, the night ends with a fantastic fireworks display. After the game you have your pick of places to grab a quick bite to eat with the American Tobacco Historic District and Brightleaf Square offering restaurants and bars within walking distance.

The Durham Bulls play from April through September and offer tickets starting at $7.00. Tickets can be purchased at www.durhambulls.com. And if watching a live game doesn’t fill your appetite for baseball, or if you’re just a huge fan of the film Bull Durham, you can check out the Historic Durham Athletic Park where the film was shot.

Here's a preview of the fun you can expect to find at a Durham Bull's game!
