United States Visitor Care Code Helps You Travel Green

When it comes time to plan your next trip to Durham check out www.visitorcarecode.org to learn about how you can be a more sustainable traveler. The United States Visitor Care Code was developed by the Center for Sustainable Tourism at East Carolina University and contains ten actions that travelers can take to reduce their impact on the environment, support communities, and have a more rewarding experience during their travels. Travelers do not have to follow all ten actions, instead they can pick and choose those that work best for them or that they feel are most important.

Here are some of the actions from the United States Visitor Care Code and how could participate in them on your next trip to Durham:

Learn About Your Destination- Enjoy a rewarding experience by learning more about the natural environment, culture, and history that makes every destination unique.

You can learn about Durham before you go by visiting the Durham CVB’s website. While you are here you can learn about the area’s natural history through hands on experience such as the paddle trips led by Frog Hollow Outdoors. You can also explore Durham’s history by taking a trip to Historic Stagville or Bennett Place, the site of the largest Civil War surrender.

Support Locals – As a visitor the money you spend on your trip can help support the local artisans, farmers, and business owners whose livelihood depends on tourism.

During your visit to Durham stop by the Farmers' Market and Craft Market to find locally grown produce and handmade products such as chocolates, soaps, and crafts. Many of the restaurants in the area are owned by Durham residents and offer everything from pies made from scratch to upscale dining.

Dispose of your Waste Properly – Leave a beautiful place for others to enjoy – recycle where possible and always dispose of your waste properly

Every guest room comes equipped with a recycling bin at the Arrowhead Inn, so it is easy to make sure that your recyclable products go to their proper place.
